What is athlete’s foot?

Athlete’s foot (tinea pedis) is a fungal infection that affects the skin on your feet. It is caused by fungi that thrive in warm and moist environments like changing rooms, showers and public pools. Walking barefoot in these places can put you at greater risk. Athlete’s foot usually occurs between your toes, but it can also affect the soles and sides of your feet.

Good to know!

You don’t have to be an athlete to get infected, athlete’s foot is very common. Athlete’s foot may feel uncomfortable, but in most cases there’s nothing to worry about and it can be treated easily.

Common symptoms of athlete’s foot

You might have athlete’s foot if you notice:

  • Burning or itchy feet and toes
  • Scaly, very dry, cracked or peeling feet
  • A scaly, red foot rash
  • Softening or whitening of the skin between your toes
  • Cracked skin between your toes that may bleed

Start treatment sooner rather than later to prevent it from spreading to other areas of your body.

If untreated, athlete’s foot can spread to other parts of your body and cause other types of fungal skin infections. Athlete’s foot can spread to the groin and cause jock itch or to the toenails and cause a fungal nail infection.

Frequently Asked Questions about Canespro® Once Daily

What is the difference between Canesten Cream and Canespro® Once Daily?

Canespro® Once Daily is a product containing bifonazole, which is a more convenient treatment. Apply only once daily for 2-3 weeks compared to conventional antifungal medications. Fungal infections are sometimes co-infected by bacterial infections and inflammation. Canespro® Once Daily has the ability to kill gram-positive bacteria (such as Corynebacterium minutissimum) and reduce inflammation. [1-4]

Is Canespro® Once Daily the equivalent of steroid treatments?

Studies in healthy volunteers have shown that bifonazole produces an effect equivalent to 1% hydrocortisone, in reducing wheal and flare responses to intracutaneous histamine, and in decreasing UV-induced erythema. [1-3] Bifonazole have also been shown to inhibit keratinase, an enzyme that stimulates inflammation.

Why is Canespro® Once Daily indicated as once-daily?

Bifonazole has a lipopholic profile and provides better skin absorption than clotrimazole leading to higher amount in skin. In a comparative study of bifonazole and clotrimazole absorbed into the skin, bifonazole concentrations in all layers were approximately 1 times greater than those of clotrimazole.[1]

In addition, when about 6000 patients with fungal infections were treated with bifonazole cream once a day for each type of fungal infection, efficacy was more than 90%.[2]

How does Canespro® Once Daily improve symptoms in shorter duration compared to other azole?

Bifonazole can inhibit 2 steps of ergosterol biosynthesis while other azoles inhibit only 1 step. Bifonazole also rapidly penetrates the skin layer within 30 minutes and last up to 120 hours. [1]

Should Canespro® Once Daily be applied more often in patients who sweat a lot (E.g. exercising)?

There is no need because Bifonazole rapidly penetrates the skin layer within 30 minutes and last up to 120 hours. [1]
